Used electric vehicles are becoming increasingly accessible, and the German automobile club ADAC has compiled a list of affordable options—from BMW to Tesla—that cost less than €20,000.

While new EVs still tend to be more expensive than their combustion-engine counterparts, the used car market has seen a noticeable shift in recent months. Prices are dropping, and more models are hitting the market at lower price points.

One major factor driving this change is the growing number of lease returns, especially from contracts signed between 2020 and 2023. At the same time, new vehicle prices have been declining, and overall demand for used EVs remains modest. As a result, significantly more models are now available for less than €20,000—not just compact cars, but vehicles across multiple segments.

ADAC analyzed current market data to compile a selection of EVs that can be purchased for the price of an average used car. Many of these are well-suited for daily use and some even offer enough range for longer trips.

Key Considerations When Choosing a Used EV

If you’re planning to use an electric vehicle as your main car, it’s important to look for a realistic driving range of at least 300 kilometers. Charging speed also matters: for convenience on the road, the vehicle should support fast charging at a minimum of 100 kW. Models like the Tesla Model 3 and Volkswagen ID.3 meet these criteria and are currently available in relatively large numbers on the used market.

There are even more options for those who primarily need a car for short distances or commuting. These models typically offer a range between 150 and 300 kilometers. However, their fast-charging capability usually falls between 40 and 70 kW, which makes them less practical for long-distance travel. On the upside, many of these vehicles are available for under €15,000. Examples include the Renault Zoe and BMW i3—both early mass-market EVs that remain popular today.

In summary, the used EV market now offers solid value and a growing selection of models for budget-conscious buyers. With the right choice, owning an electric vehicle has never been more within reach.
